- visit of a part of the Roman Theatre in Naples, incorporated in the 15th century by the houses that still stand in the Via Anticaglia, Vico Cinquesanti and Via S. Paolo. Entry is through a typical Neapolitan house - commonly known as "basso" (basement flat) due to its location at street level - and you will find yourself in the Roman Theatre. By simply opening a trapdoor other areas are accessed where Nero had his private dressing rooms on the occasions he came to Naples to stage his shows (this part of the visit lasts 20 minutes).

Perugia: When Rome was not much more than a camp of huts, in the Etruscan Perugia there were 7 gates, including the massive Porta Pulchra or of Augustus. Entering by Porta San Pietro, renovated on the outside by Agostino di Duccio in 1475, the Basilica of San Domenico is on the right. The cloisters and the adjoining convent house the important National Archaeological Museum of Umbria. From there we will continue to the Piazza del Sopramuro, which houses the fifteenth-century Old University building, together with the Capitano del Popolo Palace; going uphill we will visit one of the most important square of Italy: the Piazza Grande of Perugia (Piazza IV Novembre), a wonderful monumental complex including the Palazzo dei Priori, the Cathedral and - in the middle of the square - the Fontaine Maggiore of the thirteenth century. At the opposite end of Corso Vannucci there is a famous garden belvedere which has been built on the foundations of the Rocca Paolina, the fortress commissioned by Pope Paul III in 1540. As if under a huge bell, these foundations contain a whole district of the old city, a dead city, a kind of Medieval Pompeii which has been opened to the public and provides a fascinating visit.
Hotel check-in:
- at the Antica Dimora Alla Rocca hotel in Trevi (45 km from Perugia) - 4-star hotel in a historical building in the city centre.
- or at Villa di Monte Solare - former aristocratic villa near Trasimeno lake.
Evening Dinner at the hotel restaurant (4-course meal with drinks included).

Sunday 13 November 2005

Morning Departure for Assisi (about 33 km from Trevi)
Meeting with the local guide who will accompany the group for the morning during the visit of the city (languages: English, French and Italian).
Assisi: the most ancient core of the town is protected by a defence system made up of eight fortified gates and a long boundary wall, still very well preserved, with two castles at each end: the Rocca Maggiore, rebuilt by Cardinal Albornotz in 1367 and the Rocca Minore. In addition to San Francesco, we can also visit the churches of Santa Chiara and St Peter. The first was built in Gothic style between 1257 and 1265, the second, a bit older, is decorated by an elegant central portal and three rose-windows. The Dome, devoted to Assisi Patron Saint, San Rufino, maintains unchanged the wonderful façade with sculptures and relief; instead, over the centuries the interior underwent rebuilding work which completely changed the original plans of the thirteenth century. The Square of the Town Hall, placed in the ancient area of the forum, hosts the Palazzo dei Priori of 1337, the thirteenth-century Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the temple of Minerva, built during the Augustan age with Corinthian capitals, columns and pronaos which are still very well preserved.
Afternoon Return to Rome in the early afternoon.
