Conférence des Notariats de L'Union Européenne

A word from the CNUE's President in 2008

In Europe, faced with the challenges of our information society and globalisation, more than ever European civil law notaries have a mission to emphasise the value of their role for citizens in their private legal affairs, for the family, consumers, businesses and, in general, for the economy.

As a consequence, the CNUE's ongoing priority is to demonstrate to the European authorities that the civil law notary's role is an asset for the public, with regard both to its various social aspects and to economic legal certainty.

The authentic instrument is very valuable. Its value lies in the fact that it guarantees the validity and full effectiveness of contracts drawn up by civil law notaries in accordance with the applicable law, according to the country of origin and destination.

On the basis of its added value and principles - thanks to which it has built up its importance in society and recognition of the usefulness of its activities - the European notariat must continue work improving its quality parameters even further. Through the CNUE, it is important to make sure that all European civil law notaries can take advantage of up-to-date legal training and that our services are of the highest quality in terms of the personal welcome provided for citizens, the accuracy of legal advice, timeframe and cost. It is with this in mind that European civil law notaries are in the vanguard of incorporating new technologies into all notarial offices.

Together European notariats have implemented several projects, such as the European Notarial Network, the European Register of Wills and, in the near future, a European platform for verification of electronic signatures issued by European civil law notaries. For the benefit of European citizens, the CNUE will strengthen its contacts with officials at the European institutions, who actually represent these citizens. As we say in Spain, "by speaking to each other we can understand each other".

President
